Q&A with Kimberly Swan & Darque Reviews Contest!

Regular Vampire Wire readers know that I am always going to Kimberly Swan's Darque Reviews for news about exciting paranormal/urban fantasy books and authors. Kimberly's a pro -- her reviews always include summaries and her thoughts about the book. They're refreshingly snark-free and respectful of the authors (leaving those of us who like to snark more room in the field). In other words, her sites are for people who really want to know about books.

Recently Kimberly's expanded her online presence to include a Darque Reviews website and increased her content to carry more author interviews and contests. Frankly, I don't know how she does it all, especially since she's not cluttering up her pages with all sorts of extraneous stuff and excessive flash graphics like some bloggers. (Naked David Boreanaz is not extraneous.)

So I wanted to know more about Kimberly's approach to her reviews and why she's dedicated so much of her time to one genre. Kimberly will be giving away a copy of Lynsay Sands' Immortal Hunter to one person who leaves a comment. Tell us what you want from a review or where you go to find out more about books or just say hi. The contest ends Saturday night and a winner will be chosen at random.
-------------------------------

MARTA
: Why don’t you tell us a little about your reading background and how you came to create Darque Reviews?

KIMBERLY: I’ve always enjoyed reading, and it seems that the older I got, the more I read. A friend who runs an ebook review site asked me a few years ago if I had ever thought about reviewing, so I tried it out. Then I found myself reviewing for a magazine and a print review site. Eventually I realized that as much as I enjoyed reviewing, I wanted more control over the books I read. That’s how Darque Reviews started.

MARTA: When you started your blog, you were one of the few reviewers who focused on paranormal and urban fantasy fiction. What appealed to you about the genre?

KIMBERLY: More than anything it’s the "What if" factor. I can get lost for a few hours in these books, and for me that’s the most enjoyable part.

MARTA: Some reviewers have become known for their snark (and I love those, except when they’re directed at me, natch), but you’re always treat your reviews seriously. Do you have a policy about this? What happens if you hate a book, or think it’s really badly written?

KIMBERLY: I started out reviewing for other sites, not for myself, so that’s part of the reason why I tend to lean more towards serious.

Most books have some redeeming quality. While a book might not be my cup of tea, it may appeal to other readers. I try to mention the qualities that someone else might appreciate, and still make my point if it’s not a book that I’d recommend to readers who share a taste in books that’s similar to my own.

I average about one or two review books each year that I’ve agreed to read, but find that I can’t finish it because it’s just that bad. I won’t review a book I can’t finish, so with those rare books I notify the author or their publicist and tell them why.

MARTA: How many books do you read in a week? What other things do you like to read?

KIMBERLY: On average I read five books a week, but sometimes more if some of them are short. If I’m not reading a book for review on Darque Reviews, then it’s usually non-fiction history, something on myths and legends, or a steamy erotic romance.

MARTA: You’ve just started a website in conjunction with your blog. Are you changing the direction of Darque Reviews, or expanding content?

KIMBERLY: I’m not really changing the direction, but it’s definitely expanding with the website. It will be more organized, and hopefully easier for readers to browse through. I’ll be able to use the blog more for updates, guest blogs and giveaways.

MARTA: Who are a few favorite writers who you think should be read by more readers?

KIMBERLY: I know there are many that I’m surprised aren’t mentioned more often, but a few off of the top of my head:

MARTA: Writers are notoriously sensitive to criticism. Have you had any unpleasant experiences?

KIMBERLY: As far as reviews go I haven’t really had any unpleasant experiences, thank goodness.

MARTA: What’s your advice for someone who wants to start reviewing?

KIMBERLY: Be sure that you have the time to dedicate to reading/reviewing books, especially if you have a family. You also might want to work with a review site to start with where books are requested through them.

MARTA: Can you give us any predictions about the genre?

KIMBERLY: Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance have been around in some form for a long time, so I think it will continue to expand each year. There are so many ideas just waiting to worm their way into an author’s creative brain, and there’s a large following that are eager for each new book to hit the shelves.

MARTA: If you could take a vacation into one book for a week (or two) what book would it be and what would you do while you were there?

KIMBERLY: Wow, that’s an amazingly difficult question! I’ve tried to think of one that I love where someone isn’t always getting killed. *grin* I’d have to choose A Taste of Darkness by Nina Bangs (from her Mackenzie Vampires series). I’d get a room at the Woo Woo Inn and spend that week or two being entertained by the antics of the "Cosmic Troublemakers": Sparkle Stardust, Ganymede, and Trouble.

Thanks so much for having me on Vampire Wire!

MARTA: Thank you, Kimberly, for finding the time to answer my questions and for having such a terrific site!

great interview... love that question about taking a vacation into a book... LOL! thanks for the chance to win immortal hunter!

Kimberly Swan said...

Thanks for commenting Tina, that vacation question was a killer. lol There are so many books I'd love a short escape to, but finding one where I wouldn't be killed off in the first 5 minutes I was there was really tough. *grin*

Marta said...

Hi, Tina and Kimberly, agh! That should have been my question for the contest: in what book would you like to vacation?

Me, I'd probably like to pop into a P.G. Wodehouse novel: country houses, hijinks, hot baths, romantic entanglements, utter nonsense.

Cybercliper said...

Great interview! I’m fairly new to the blog scene and am very happy to find new sites that review my favorite genre – paranormal/urban fantasy. I especially like a straightforward review of the plot, characters, the reviewer’s likes and/or dislikes regarding the book. I appreciate that you review with respect for the author’s work – good or bad – either way the effort is there and the author takes a risk by putting themselves out there. I cringe at some of the outright hostile reviews I’ve seen on other sites.

As for the vacation – the Woo Woo Inn would be fun, but I’m thinking the Castle of Dreams would be a scream….

Kimberly Swan said...

Marta - Thanks again for having me! Ahh...your book getaway sounds like fun with a nice dose of relaxing. :)

Cybercliper - Welcome to the world of blogging! :) What bothers me most in the totally unpleasant reviews is that many times I've seen them as being more personal attacks on the author than on the book itself.

The Castle of Dark Dreams was my second choice (I actually went back and forth over that for a few days. lol) Have you tried her new Gods of the Night series?

RachaelfromNJ said...

Hi Marta! Hi Kimberly!

Just coming by to say hi. No need to enter me in the contest even though it sounds like an awesome book! :)

Kimberly I love your site as you already know and you do have awesome reviews. Great interview and I learned something new about you Kimberly! I didn't know you read five books a week! WOW! :) I am extremely jealous. LOL

Pissenlit said...

Great interview! Also, AH! AH-HA!! Casey Daniels! Excellent! I'd come across that recommendation before and meant to add those books to my TBR list but didn't get around to it and all I could remember was "Pepper". Thanks for jogging my memory! :)

Kimberly Swan said...

Rachael - Thanks! :) I think it's going to be a hot summer and you're going to stay in the a/c reading much of the time, so by next fall you'll be saying..."HA! I read 5 books a week too!" *grin*

Pissenlit - There aren't nearly enough series with a ghost element. When I find them I usually stick with them, and Pepper is a lot of fun. Glad I could help jog your memory! :)

Marta said...

Cybercliper, welcome to the world o' blogs. Those of us who do blog regularly know how hard it is to keep up the way Kimberly does.

Hi, RachelfromNJ, thanks for dropping by and be sure to tell me when you've got UF/paranormal reviews up on your blog so I can post links!

Pissenlit, doesn't it drive you crazy when you can't remember the name of an author and book? I've spent years trying to find old faves.

bridget3420 said...

I like to hear whether or not the reviewer recommends the book.

Pissenlit said...

Kimberly Swan - First thing I did after commenting here was bring up the public library's system and put a hold on the first book. Yay! Can't wait to read it!

Marta - Oh ya, definitely. It drives me nuts when I can't remember something. This one was particularly bad because all I remembered was the one name and that I really wanted to read it which isn't much help at all. :)

Well look at that, I got all excited about remembering the author/series that I totally forgot about answering the questions. Ha! Okay, reviews...I expect them to be spoiler free and if they're not, I want big bold spoiler warnings beforehand(in which case, I steer clear of them). As for where I go to find out more about books, that would be review blogs, sites like goodreads and librarything and authors' sites. Hi. :D

scooper said...

Hey guys! Great interview. I don't need a rating on a book, but I want to know if the book was entertaining, had issues, didn't appeal to the reviewer. I look for sights that give me reasons why to read (or not read) a story.

Jo said...

That was a great interview! It's always nice finding out more about the bloggers you follow!

I love reviews that are unique in some way. It can be really awesome if someone has a unique sense of humour which they can incorporate into their review. Not only are you finding out about great books, but you're being entertained beyond the norm at the same time! That's not important though. I like reviews to have proper synopsis/summeries. It really bugs me when they're vague, because I can't decide if I like the sound of it or not - and sometimes blurbs are just awful and should be ignored. I like it when bloggers write their own summery, without spoilers, but with enough info for me to spark my interest, or not as the case may be.

As to a book to have a vacation in... I think that would have to be any in Lisa Shearin's Raine Benares series. That world is just amazing, and some of the characters. Seriously, that's the place to be - or rather, book to be in. :)

Thanks for the reviewing advice - I'm just expanding my reviewing beyond my blog and LibraryThing, and you've now provided me a strategy for dealing with the DNF books.

Mostly what I'm looking for in a review is the extreme barebones outline of the plot (no spoilers) and whether the reviewer thought it was worth reading or not. I'll read more in-depth reviews after I've read a book, particularly when my reaction to it seems to go against the prevailing reaction.

I'm a reviewer sometimes and I've started my own blog about urban fantasy.
I didn't know about Kimberly's site but she will have a link in my blog.

Bridget - I usually remember to write on the YA paranormals who might enjoy the book, but I often forget on the adult reads. If you're ever curious about a book I've reviewed though, just ask and I'm happy to tell you.

Pissenlit - Yay, a new series for you! :)

SCooper - Thanks, good to 'see' you!

Jo - You just reminded me of something. Reviewers are human and are bound to make mistakes, but something that drives me nuts when it's done over and over is a book synopsis that makes me wonder if they've even read the book. lol

Blinky - Thanks for stopping by! I'm glad to hear that we keep you informed on the new books in the genre. :)

juliet_k said...

Great interview Kimberly and Tina. It was refreshing to get to know the person behind the site. I especially liked the two books you'd take a vacation into. Haven't read them but feel the need to. LOL. Thanks!

Kimberly Swan said...

Chris - Thankfully those DNF books aren't very common and I'm happy I could help.

Brandy - Thanks! Best of luck on your new blog. :)

Marta said...

Bridget, I know -- sometimes I'm reading a review and I can't tell if the reviewer liked a book or not.

Pissenlit, I agree. I never know what to do when a reviewer gives away critical plot points in my novels. Do I ask her to please remove the spoilers, or at least mark them? Generally I just let it go.

Thanks, Blinky!

Jo, I like summaries with reviews, but I don't like those reviews that are ONLY summaries. Hey, I can read the book cover myself.

Hi, Scooper, nice to see you here! I always like the thoroughness of your reviews.

Chris, 1) your blog post today on pizza delivery superheroes made me laugh out loud. 2) I do that, too -- read reviews AFTER I read a book.

Brandy, glad to have you here and congrats on your new review blog. I'm jealous of your mad design skills.

Hi Kimberly and Marta!

I'm a big fan of paranormal and urban fantasy. It's so hard to find reviews on some of the best books. The really popular books have reviews everywhere. I love Darque Reviews and Vampire Wire of course, you guys have the coolest content .... any idea where to find authors new to the genre?

Kimberly Swan said...

Juliet K - Thank you, it was really great of Marta to do the interview. That's great, I hope you get a chance to read Nina Bangs!

Tetewa - I'm SO happy to hear that! :)

Dottie - Hi! A really great place to find new Fantasy authors is to visit Tia Nevitt's blog: http://fantasydebut.blogspot.com/ I'll keep an eye out for anyone doing something similar for Paranromal Romance.

Fantasy Dreamer said...

I really enjoyed this interview, lots of information. Kimberly is one of my favorite book reviewers and she usually adds a book or two to my TBR list weekly. I know with her reviews what I can expect from a book. Thank you!!!!

I Heart Book Gossip said...

I think reviews have to be truthful. Like really truthful, and the reviewer has to give us the juicy deets on what they really think. Please include me in the contest.

Kimberly Swan said...

Fantasy Dreamer - Thanks for stopping by! It's amazing how fast those TBR piles and wish lists grow! *grin*

I Heart Book Gossip - I agree about truthful reviews. It's great that there are so many sites/blogs to compare book reviews. I think it gives readers a good opportunity to find reviewers who are a close match in what they see in likes and dislikes in a book.

Marta, thanks for having Kim... I do love her reviews and contests; even though I did try to bribe someone with Chocolate one time!! And your place... well you know I love this place!
Awesome interview ladies...and I love the last question. Have not heard that yet!!!
And ps... you can enter me in the drawing... and I will try my hardest not to bribe anyone with David Boreanaz goodies... lol!!!

Kimberly Swan said...

Eva - Thanks, glad to hear that you've found some new authors to check out too!

Cecile - I'm still laughing over that chocolate 'incident'! Thanks for stopping by, and somehow I just don't see you giving up David B goodies, even as a bribe. *grin*

Cecile said...

Kim, I thought I would throw that in to confuse people... They may think I will give them some David B if I get to win... LOL!! ***evil laughter going on in office room*** I will try anything to win these damn tooo hottt to handle books! What does that say about my life... let's not go there.. let's talk more about a naked David!!!

Marta said...

Tetewa, that's why online reviews are so important to authors, especially since print reviews are becoming rarer.

Dottie, check out my blogroll. You'll see updates of blogs with news about authors. SciFi Guy and Literary Escapism often run covers and summaries of new series.

Everyone else, thanks for visiting!

IHeart, I think the challenge for reviewers is to be honest, but understand that individual taste is a factor. That's one reason I won't review.

Maija, I can't believe how fast Kimberly gets reviews posted!

Cecile, now there's explicit hawt and there's implied, smoldering hot. Try my novels for sexy without every detail. (I'm sure you can imagine them!)

Cecile said...

Oh, you better believe I am trying to get my hands on your books **wink wink**

Hi Marta and Kimberly!

I would love to win a copy of "The Immortal Hunter".

Thanks,

Kimberly Swan said...

Cecile - hmmm.....I wonder if anyone was shocked. *snicker* Very generous offer, especially the drooling....lol

Terri W - Hi! I can really understand your genre favs, because I do sneak in a dark romantic suspense in the middle all of my urban fantasy/paranormal romance reading. :)

Congrats Kimberly on such a great site! I love paranormal and urban fantasy stories so the more sites discussing these books the better.

And of course I want a chance to win Lynsay's book so please toss my name in the hat.

Llehn said...

The most important thing for me in a review is a brief summary of the story, whether or not the reviewer liked the book and why.

lesly7ch(at)yahoo(dot)com

Kimberly Swan said...

Deedles - Thanks, always happy to hear that I'm helping to add to those wish lists!

Jody F - Thanks so much for your kind words! There are getting to be quite a few now that review urban fantasy & paranormal romance so it really gives readers some great choices in seeing what's new in the genre.

Llehn - Sounds like you know exactly what you want in a review. :)

booklover1335 said...

I like a review that is entertaining, and shows the personality of the reviewer while giving the general plot and an honest review.

Nothing snarky, but why you liked or disliked a book, so that I can form an opinion based on your review whether it is a book that I might like. I think after reading several reviews from the same reviewer then reading the book will give you a pretty good idea if you are book compatible and can rely on future reviews.

Christine said...

Hi Marta & Kimberly,
Great interview. Kimberly's blog and website has become my automatic go-to for the latest scoop on upcoming paranormal, UF and sci fi novels. If only I could keep up with all the books she reads. Very impressive. :) In fact, it leads me to a question for Kimberly.

How do you keep track of all the books you get and when to read and review them? I imagine it takes a lot of organization in keeping to a schedule? ;)

Kimberly Swan said...

booklover1335 - You made a perfect point about being 'book compatible'. :)

Christine - Thanks! You know how I love to add to your tbr pile. *grin*

To answer your question...I use a DayRunner because I have to in order to keep track. Some books arrive right before release, others I have 4 months or more before release. Each book gets scheduled, and then it gets a post-it stuck to the cover with the book info, release date and post date before being 'filed' in review order in a huge basket. :)

Marta said...

Hi, everyone!

Cecile, just click the links on my sidebars to get my books! Or, you can just wait and hope you win one of my contests. I can never tell if people think my novels are actually prizes or if they think I'm just clearing out my bookshelves.

Deedles and Christine, I confess that I rely on Kimberly's site A LOT for my Vampire Wire stories. Thank heavens, she's more organized than I am. I just write down things on slips of paper and then misplace them.

Christine said...

WOW. I knew it involved some supersonic organizational skillz.

Marta--at least you get to the paper. I always seem to think of great things when I'm driving or in the shower! Neither place being a good place for pen and paper. :p

Kimberly Swan said...

Marta - I was just talking to Scooper a few days ago about how I had to do the wish list on the website because I write titles and authors on whatever papers are on my desk and then they disappear. lol

Christine - It's the easiest way to organize them and to try to get them reviewed and posted by release day. lol Now if I could only organize the rest of my life that way. *grin*

Cinnamon said...

That question at the end is hilarious! I'd be frightened to vacation in any of my books, unless I was guaranteed to be under the protection of the hero!

I love the big boom toward online reviews. I personally do it as a bit of a stress reducer, but I can see how the reviews would be pretty beneficial.

Christine, I think they sell marking boards and pens for the shower! I always come up with my best ideas for plot problems when I'm walking the dogs. Unfortunately, if I daze off, the beasts will vanish somewhere in the fields. Note to self: next time get slower dogs.

I love Scooper's "Scooper Speaks" site, especially the favorite line from a novel!

Cinammon, you've got a really cool blog! How come I haven't heard of A Journey of Reading before? I'll add it to the Vampire Wire blogroll and please tell me when you've got a story you'd like me to link.

Scott, if you subscribe to Kimberly's site, you'll get all the news about new books.
