Bad Remake Ideas and Teen Vampires and Werewolves in Lurve

Okay, it's all movie and TV stuff today. Some days the news is like that. I don't know why and I've got another deadline so I can't cogitate on it much.

Don't forget to enter my contest for three copies of Stephanie Meyer's The Host.

The popularity of the "Twilight" movie franchise has producers talking about remakes of werewolf movies. "... new similar Twilight themed properties are surfacing to take a bite out the Twilight Saga love, including talk of a remake of the classic John Landis directed An American Werewolf in London." (Deadbolt)

Oh, dear, I know this will not end well. The American remake of the Swedish vampire hit, "Let the Right One In," will be directed by the guy that did "Cloverfield." Did you see "Cloverfield"? No, no one did. He said, "It reminded me a lot of my childhood, with the metaphor that the hard times of your pre-adolescent, early adolescent moment, that painful experience is a horror." In other words, he's going to throw in a hawt neighbor girl, fart jokes, and references to "Star Wars." Why, why, why in the name that all that is holy do you take an already marvelous film and "remake" it for people who can't be bothered to read sub-titles?

Read a recap of "True Blood" Season Two, Episode Three. "Fortunately Bill arrived just in time to stop Jessica and glamour her family 'within an inch of their sanity.' I wish he'd do that to me.

Here's another "True Blood" recap. "Did not understand why Sookie now owes Eric a favor for helping save her and Lafayette. I mean, going to Dallas to hunt wayard vampires? Who does Eric think Sookie is, Buffy Summers?" (Entertainment Weekly)

TEEN VAMPIRES IN HIGH SCHOOL

Review of CW's upcoming "Vampire Diaries" pilot. "Stefan is introduced to the teens as he registers himself for school. The pilot loses points for me here, because it is one of those scenes where the lead merely has to walk down a hall and instantly everyone is in love with him. I realize this is targeted towards hormonal teens, but just once couldn’t the lead do something to earn such adoration?" (TV Overmind)

In reference to the above and in defense of "Vampire Diaries," I'd say that if someone looks like Ian Somerhalder, who plays Damon, no, he really doesn't have to do anything but look like Ian Somerhalder to earn admiration.

BuddyTV does casual experiment by forcing non-Twilight fans to watch "Twilight" the movie. "Moreover, they could not understand why the vampires attend high school over and over again... After a long argument, I had to admit I see no point of attending public school. They already know all the material and frankly, they don't socialize with anyone but each other. If the point is to resist temptation then I'm not quite sure how going to a school full of tasty humans will help." Uhm, maybe they heart the cafeteria food.

Michael J. Fox's seminal masterpiece of teen angst, a passion for basketball, and transformation, "Teen Wolf," is being remade.
"MTV announced today that the cable network will reinvent the 1985 Michael J. Fox classic for today's MTV audience, and that it will combine horror elements and werewolf mythology, and feature a sweeping romance at its center." (Entertainment Weekly) MTV's producing it and that spells high QWALITY! Here's my casting suggestion for the lead.

Here is a plot summary for the orginal "Teen Wolf." Get your box of Kleenex ready because you'll be laughing and crying at this tender, heart-moving tail! "Scott subsequently learns to use his family 'curse' to gain popularity at school, becoming the team's star basketball player, and learns to transform at will between his normal self and The Wolf. His basketball team goes from last to first, and Scott begins spending most of his school time as The Wolf. He also wins the heart of Pamela while ignoring the affections of his best friend, Boof (Susan Ursitti), who has loved him since childhood."

GRATUITOUS VIDEOS OF THE DAY

It's sci-fi week for GVDS, which means that I'm just going to post more "The X-Files" videos. TBagEdge has a video for her favorite character, Alex Krycek, played by Nicholas Lea.

RIP1009 also made a video in honor of the enigmatic Alex Krycek. Beautiful song by John Hiatt.

firstly--I love that shot of Eric up top. While I dig his new hairstyle, I can't help but miss the longer style.

secondly--I'm not sure which I will cry over more, Let the Right One In remake or Teen Wolf. For different reasons I want NEITHER OF THEM to ever be remade. Jesu whatever happened to remaking a movie after the principle was dead huh? How can they oust Michael J. Fox like that? And didn't An American Werewolf get remade like 15 years ago? or wait...that was An American Werewolf in Paris I guess.

lol the whole going to HS over and over again always cracks me up. I mean they must have found the meaning to eternal life or something in the hallowed halls of High Schools everywhere (or maybe they're seeing if they can attend every single HS in the country?).

It is my sincerest hope that the whole Jessica and Hoyt thing works out in a good way. I mean I think Jessica couldn't possibly have picked a better guy to help her confidence issues and such. Though if she was still alive it would be all kinds of illegal wouldn't it?

Thanks, Patricia! For those who aren't already in the know, Patricia's Vampire Notes is definitely a go-to place for news on books.

Lexie, I know "Let the Right One In" will be dumbed down because most of the directors who do these remakes are clueless. All explosions and nekkid boobs.

I heart Michael J. Fox madly. Who could be as deliciously smarmy and yet as touching as MJF? No one.

I don't know why anyone would ever go through high school again, even if they like it. Curfews, tests, getting up early, rules, listening to adults lecture you, etc., ugh.

First of all, a remake of An American Werewolf in London???? Noooooooo. The effects might be dated now but back then they were state of the art! :-(

Secondly, I kind of agree about the whole vampires going to school. I was miserable in school and would rather die than go back there. Then again, I suppose if you're a vampire, you *have* died. And you have kickass powers which would drive the adolescence nuts. :-D

I don't like the idea of an American remake. The charm would go away and the movie will definitely change from what was intended. Like the Grudge movies...making the ghost have an affair with an American. *sigh* I really wish they'd just bring over the original movies here instead of remaking them.

The Vampire Diaries. ::shivers:: This makes me very, very sad. Like boycotting the CW sad. Or offering L. J. Smith a box of chocolates and a shoulder to cry on sad. It sounds like they've absolutely ruined those books. Yes, True Blood has taken Charlaine Harris' idea and ran with it...but it works. The Vampire Diaries? Not so much. ::sob:: Why did you have to ruin Stefan and Damon for me, you evil TV station?? Why??

Maybe it's a cost factor, but why do remakes? I'm so tired of art and artist alike taking something, remaking it, presenting it like they have such an original concept. If an artist wants to be considered an inspiring, genius by their peers, then for heaven's sake create something new!! Blah! There are some amazing books out there, some older, some from new and amazing authors that would create wonderful movies. Next time I'll let loose and tell ya what I really think :-)

LL, Rick Baker, a famous makeup artist, created that great werewolf look for actor David Naughton.

As for hanging out in high school? You're rich, dead, 200 years old, sophisticated and you think, "Gee, I'd like to to chemistry all over again -- with hawt 16-year-old girls!"

Popin, the ghost falls in love? Ugh.

Jackie, I tried watching "True Blood," but it was too far from my own image of the Southern Vampire stories. Also, I was predisposed to dislike anything by Alan Ball.

Cyberclipper, you're assuming artists are at work. Artists don't do big budget remakes. The people who succeed in Hollywood are the people who have the same taste as the lowest common denominator.

Michael J Fox remains one of my favorite actors/voice actors to this day. He's remained such a decent, charming fellow even after all this time that its hard not to love him. (and I just finished watching the last hour of Teen Wolf XD oh TV you never fail me).

Given what American directors have done to the Korean/Japanese horror movies they've remade I have no hope at all for Let the Right One In. At all. Apparently American film companies don't quite understand that creating a chilling atmosphere goes a long way to scaring an audience more then faketastic looking deaths.

Stuff like Cloverfield and Saw and Last House on the Left don't scare me--they creep me out in a ''I will never watch this again and never ever recommend it' sort of way. Let the Right One In creeped me out, but in a 'I did not see that coming!' sort of way.

Gah. I had this argument with my brother the other day. Well more so the 'Slasher' horror movies vs. the 'Thriller' horror movies.

Its funny no one seems to think about the fact that the Cullens just keep repeating HS. I mean if I had lived as long as they have I would be more inclined to repeat college--at least in college there's new material, specialized classes, I could take those classes in Buffy and Star Wars and Star Trek I keep hearing about...
