Contest for THREE Copies of Stephanie Meyer's THE HOST

It's Monday and you're thinking, "What big, juicy book can I hide under my desk to pass the boring and meaningless hours at the office?"

Well, Vampire Wire feels your pain and I'm thrilled that Hachette Books has offered THREE COPIES of Stephanie Meyer's new sci-fi novel, The Host, for a contest. Yes, I agree that it is a show of awesome generosity, and thanks go to Miriam Parker at Hachette, a publisher that understands the value of online readers and bloggers.

SciFi Guy
and others have assured us that this new novel is very good, and Meyer has described it as science fiction that can be enjoyed by people who don't normally read science fiction.

The book's website has all sorts of goodies: from excerpts, trailers, audio clips, author's info... Here's the publisher's description:

Our world has been invaded by an unseen enemy. Humans become hosts for these invaders, their minds taken over while their bodies remain intact and continue their lives apparently unchanged. Most of humanity has succumbed.

When Melanie, one of the few remaining "wild" humans, is captured, she is certain it is her end. Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, was warned about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the glut of senses, the too-vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

When outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off on a dangerous and uncertain search for the man they both love.

One of the most compelling writers of our time, Stephenie Meyer brings us a riveting and unforgettable novel about the persistence of love and the very essence of what it means to be human.

THE RULES: The contest runs for a week, through the evening of Sunday, July 5. To enter, leave a comment and mention something you like about scifi. It could be a movie you like, a book, or that you love the contest of space travel. It could be that you would like to expand your dating options to non-human sentient creatures. Whatever.

Winners will be chosen at random and winners will be restricted to residents of the U.S. and Canada.

GRATUITOUS VIDEOS OF THE DAY

The GVDS will be dedicated to scifi shows in honor of the contest for The Host. Yes, I am using this as an excuse to post "The X-Files" videos all week.

Oh, I love this very clever video by RebeccaScully, set to "Sway" by Dean Martin.

Charvill created this video with a great cover of Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time."

I've always loved sci-fi! I love that it can take me a few years into the future so that I can see what kind of tomorrow today might turn into. It's always both more and less than I thought that it would be - just like real life.
Outstanding!

Sci-fi is really different from everything else cause its out of the ordinary. Aliens and Predator was one of my favorite movies. Its the closest we'll ever get to know what an alien looks like.

Count me in.

Hello, My husband and I have been fans of Sci-fi type literature and
movies, etc., since the likes of
The Twilight Zone, Dr.Who, and
The Jetson's. Today's Sci-fi takes
me to other worlds and type of people that may possibly exist!
Please count me in.
Many thanks, Cindi

Oh, "The Jetsons" broke my heart! I have always been crushed that I do not have a robot maid.

One of my fave sci-fi confections is "Futurama." I love the humor and the gorgeous graphics.

I read The Host and it's a really good book. i'm sure people will enjoy it. A total departure from theTwilight series which I enjoyed.

Considering my current aggravation with the Post Office, I think my favourite SciFi element would be the Star Trek transporter, allowing instant accurate delivery of packages. =D

Marta said...

Hi, Shell, thanks for sharing!

Jake, it took the USPS 11 days to deliver a first-class envelope to me within the state. I could have used that transporter, too.

Well, sci-fi is like everything else -- when it's good, it's good, when it's bad -- well you get my drift. Personally, I like sci-fi when the sci-fi isn't the "star" -- in other words, when it's a good story which just happens to be set in the future, in space, etc.

One of the things I like about scifi is that it allows you to suspend disbelief and take a break from the normal everyday world we all live in.

Thanks for the chance to win. I feel like I am one of the few people left that hasnt read this yet.

I love science fiction. You get an out of this world element (or maybe something that just hasn't been invented yet) mixed in with human problems. So many good science fiction books and movies. I'd say my favorite science fiction author is Tanith Lee, but she also writes in other genres.

I really enjoy the time travel aspects of science fiction. There's something so exciting and romantic about being trapped some place else - like Sam from Quantum Leap.

You also can't beat alien/space stories. Love hearing about other worlds and other species - it can be so freaky at times. :-D

Marta said...

Hi, Janicu, I haven't heard of Tanith before, but I'll keep a look out for her books. Thanks for the suggestion.

Lady Lazarus, I like time travel, too, because it poses all sorts of interesting problems for the characters. Re: Quantum Leap, I caught a few minutes of it a while back and it's so dated and the theme song is molto cheezy. I do like Scott Bakula a whole bunch, though.

The Kate Daniels book series is great, I love the tv show Meduim and Heros is the best in tv. Paranormal fall into the sci-fi stuff right. I also like Patricia Brigs a lot the werewolf/shapeshifiting stuf rocks

Something I like about SciFi?
I really don't know. I'm not a huge SciFi fan, but when something is done well, I like it. However, it also depends on the believability of the story. I have a hard time getting into the novels that try to develop their own technology and spend way too much time trying to get people to understand it. If I can believe the technology, then I generally enjoy it.

Something I like about sci-fi is that it gives me a common bond with my brother. He's 4 years older than me and we grew up squabbling about everything and still disagree about a lot of things. But I have fond memories of staying up late with him to watch Doctor Who with Tom Baker on PBS and going to the drive-in theater to watch Star Trek, Star Wars or Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Now, we call and discuss the newest Doctor Who or Torchwood or Star Wars or Star Trek, etc.

Thanks! :0)

I like to read sci-fi rather than watch it, unless it xfiles or smallville (does that show count?). You just never know what is going to happen next!

I like sci fi for its smooth, creamy taste and the way it compliments a good white wine. It's also useful for removing stains from delicate fabrics and curing heartburn.

(oh, don't be hating on Quantum Leap though.. sure its periodically silly but its just so much fun! :D)

I've been a huge fan of sci fi since I watched Star Trek as a kid -- then Star Wars came out and I started reading more widely in the sci fi genre. It's a wonderful way to escape the world for a while and enjoy myself!

This is easy! I love Sci-Fi because it sets me free, sets my mind free to roam my imagination and the worlds that authors create.
I've been able to visit countless worlds and laugh, love and fight with countless beings.

Without Science Fiction (and Fantasy and Horror) this world would be such a terribly boring place.

Joyce said...

I love scifi because you never know what to expect. Things can change suddenly and it doesn't have to always make sense. It expands your realms of the imagination.

I have always loved and still do love SciFi largely because there are no limits, no boundaries - it is sheer creative writing outside the 'box'! So many beautiful minds spilling over with concepts, characters and worlds I can only dream to experience :)
