Contest for Three Sets of FIVE SCARY Books!

Hokay, here's the new contest (and I told you I would have a lot this week). Hachette Books has very generously offered to contribute THREE SETS of FIVE SCARY BOOKS to Vampire Wire readers. You should feel very special.

Here are the books:

The Heretic's Daughter By Kathleen Kent

Description: Martha Carrier was one of the first women to be accused, tried and hanged as a witch in Salem, Massachusetts. Like her mother, young Sarah Carrier is bright and willful, openly challenging the small, brutal world in which they live.

Often at odds with one another, mother and daughter are forced to stand together against the escalating hysteria of the trials and the superstitious tyranny that led to the torture and imprisonment of more than 200 people accused of witchcraft. (more)

Sins of the Flesh By Caridad Piñeiro

Description: Caterina Shaw's days are numbered. Her only chance for survival is a highly experimental gene treatment-a risk she willingly takes. But now Caterina barely recognizes herself. She has new, terrifying powers, an exotic, arresting body-and she's been accused of a savage murder, sending her on the run.

Mick Carrera is a mercenary and an expert at capturing elusive, clever prey. Yet the woman he's hunting down is far from the vicious killer he's been told to expect: Caterina is wounded, vulnerable, and a startling mystery of medical science. (more)

When Ghosts Speak By Mary Ann Winkowski

Description
: Meet Mary Ann Winkowski. She is just like you. She is a married mother of two grown daughters. She lives in a suburban town in Ohio. She goes to church every Sunday.

And she sees and talks to ghosts.

Mary Ann's grandmother noticed her unusual ability when she was practically a baby. By the time Mary Ann was four years old, she was attending neighborhood funerals to broker communication between those who had died and their living loved ones. Word of her extraordinary abilities spread, and Mary Ann was soon accompanying her grandmother on "social calls," visits where Mary Ann would confront earthbound spirits who were sharing homes with the living. (more)

BoneMan's Daughters By Ted Dekker

Description:
They call him BoneMan, a serial killer who's abducted six young women. He's the perfect father looking for the perfect daughter, and when his victims fail to meet his lofty expectations, he kills them by breaking their bones and leaving them to die.

Intelligence officer Ryan Evans, on the other hand, has lost all hope of ever being the perfect father. His daughter and wife have written him out of their lives. (more)

The Historian By Elizabeth Kostova

Description: Breathtakingly suspenseful and beautifully written, The
Historian is the story of a young woman plunged into a labyrinth where the secrets of her family's past connect to an inconceivable evil: the dark fifteenth-century reign of Vlad the Impaler and a time-defying pact that may have kept his awful work alive through the ages.

The search for the truth becomes an adventure of monumental proportions, taking us from monasteries and dusty libraries to the capitals of Eastern Europe... (more)

Galley of The Bride Collector by Ted Dekker

CONTEST & RULES:
  • TO ENTER - Leave a comment about something that scares you. (I know I always freak when people say, "We need to talk." Also, moths scare the bejeezus outa me. Also when the house shakes because of earthquakes. I could go on.)
  • Contest runs through the evening of Wednesday, November 4.
  • Contest limited to U.S. and Canada residents who have real street address (no P.O. boxes).
  • Winners will be selected at random.

Inside New Jersey contacted me to tell me about a story they've got online about people who live the vampire lifestyle. I know -- they got in touch with me because if it's about New Jersey, I totally want to know about it. New Jersey, better than the old Jersey! New Jersey -- the Garden State. New Jersey -- home of Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi, who was in a brilliant vampire movie with a hawt priest and Jon driving a Jeep around the desert and fighting vampires.

I could watch Jon Bon Jovi fight vampires all day long. Especially to a Queen soundtrack.

"SUPERNATURAL" STUFF

I thought last night's episode, "I Believe the Children are Our Future," would be a light comic interlude in a dark season, and it started out that way. But then it veered into heavier stuff and the tension grew and grew. It was a terrific story that tied in a monster-of-the-week to the overall apocalypse arc.

The Chicago Tribune has summaries of upcoming shows and here's a fab preview of the next few shows.

GRATUITOUS VIDEOS OF THE DAY

It's Friday, so don't worry, be snappy. "Moonlight" fans, this is to cheer your day.

What scares me? I'll keep from getting too serious and say the idea of running out of books!!! :)

P.S. Although running out of books would be VERY seriously scary to me!

Ghosts. Seriously. I've read way too many books to trust those translucent buggers.

Hi :)
Thank you for the chance at winning this amazing giveaway contest.
Insects scare me. Well creep me out anyway. Give me gooseflesh. Ugh! Ever since I saw a young girl (about 6 years old) crying in the emergency room because a cockroach had crawled in her ear. The doctor had to very carefully remove it - as it was STILL ALIVE!
*shudder*
There, I creeped myself out again, just remembering that.
:)
Have a wonderful weekend,
All the best,

Garbage disposals scare me. If I have to retrieve something that has slipped in, I am convinced that it is going to turn on, despite the fact that it is turned off, unplugged and I am the only on in the kitchen, and grind up my fingers.

RachaelfromNJ said...

Marta, I'm surprised you didn't know we're all vampire in NJ! LOL

I was just trying to think of something that scares me, and the coming attraction for Saw VI came on the TV and scared the hell out of me!

I love the Saw movies but the torture devices and the idea of suffocating to death, drowning, or having your brain smashed by a device like in these movies is DAMN scary! I watch them with one eye open. :)

Awesome prizes!! Alot of great authors there.

What scars me the most is the thought of losing someone I love in some freak accident. Funny how when someone is away your mind wanders and scary thoughts can enter...

Nicole_Hadaway said...

Hailing from neighboring Pennsylvania myself, I can tell you that you forgot to mention that New Jersey is home of the 'Jersey Girl Hair' too, Marta =).

And SyFy is running Moonlight marathon today! Mick St. John all day! Sorry, but I always get sad when I see Mick in the Three Rivers promos; to me he'll always be Mick.

Things that scare me -- sharks. Especially with great, gaping maws open. I cannot open up a Jaws movie website on my computer -- that huge shark mouth with all those teeth makes my palms sweat, no lie!

Marta said...

Hi, everyone! RKC, that is a HORRIFYING story ...it can't be true, can it? Ewh.

Rachel, I'm incapable of watching scary movies. I have problems with some regular TV shows because I get too tense.

Finesse, yep, that happens to me, too.

Nicole, I am familiar with Jersey Girl Hair -- which is terrifying. Do you remember when Jon Bon Jovi had Jersey hair?

Terin, I shouldn't be laughing at your garbage disposal phobia, but I am even though I have the same worries.

Karen W., I have been stocking up on books for the future.

Cory said...

I'm terrified of roaches. If I see one I will leave the room. And not go back into it until someone insists that they killed and removed it!

Sara C said...

Spiders...(shudders), even the little harmless ones scare the bejeezus out of me!

Shell said...

Flesh eating zombies scare me!! Now in the movies all these Zombies are like track runners, you can barely outrun them.
I had a dream which I recall vividly, I was in a world where Zombies had taken over. It was me and some other survivors in midtown manhattan. They were closing in on us..when I woke up I was never so happy it was a nightmare. It was so real and vivid.

Lori said...

What a great giveaway!

What scares me most? Snakes. I am terrified of them, cannot even look at them. And getting sick in public (totally shallow). I cannot stand the thought of being ill and everyone watching me.

Thanks so much for this terrific opportunity!

Things that scare me?
1. Nightmares (if I watch something scary before bed I have the WORST nightmares EVER) Sometimes they're so bad I can't sleep the next night... how sad is that? I'm 23! ...I'm also scared of snakes and scorpions. =)

Deb said...

Don't know why but the thought of being buried alive always gets me.
Not that I would ever have to worry about it...maybe it's just a form of claustrophobia.

joder said...

The things that scare the heck outta me are snakes (any and all) and coming into a darkened room. For those first few moments you hope nothing is going to grab you. That's why I have quite a few nightlights in my home.

What scares me is needles. I have to get a lot of blood tests (stupid health issues!), and those poor ladies at the hospital, they all know me by now. I try to be good, and lord love them, they do their best to help. But every so often, I still get faint, or actually pass out. You'd think I'd get over it, since it happens so often, but nope!

Thanks!

Thanks for the opportunity to win such a great prize.

We live out in the woods a bit here in WA, and we have a couple of large animals living out here that are seen quite regularly. I am absolutely terrified of our resident cougar flying out of the woods while I am outside and getting me. Eeek! Funny, I am not nearly as afraid of the bears, but that cougar gives me the willies!

All of your scary things is making me realize how many phobias I actually have.

Shell, the zombies in "28 Days Later" spooked me considerably. They were fast.

Deb, the buried alive fear is a big one. Wasn't there an old "Twilight Zone" about a guy who was terrified of being buried alive?

Virginia, my family used to go camping in Northern California and in the evenings this swarm of bats came out. My brothers told me that they'd get caught in my long hair and bite me. I used to sleep with my head completely covered by the sleeping bag.

Chysilade, crows are scary. They're big and nasty.

itsjustme said...

I'm scared of snakes, and bees, and being caught in the escalator, I know it's stupid.

Marta said...

Tetewa, that would scare me so much I'd have to move!

Itsjustme, I had a friend who got stuck in an elevator during an earthquake and she was there for hours. She never got on an elevator again. Oh, I guess that's not very reassuring.

Peoplehater, Jon Bon Jovi is actually a pretty good actor. My favorite role of his is a quirky indie movie, The Leading Man.

What scares me? Antique porcelain dolls. I could swear the eyes follow you around the room.

When I was little my great grandfather would buy me the wedding dolls with the elaborate hair, eyes and long flowing dresses. I never complained, I knew he thought he was giving me something special.

Every night before going to bed I would stand them by height in my closet and shut the door. One night the door didn't shut all the way and when I woke up the moon was shining just right and you could see dozens of eyes glittering and staring out from the dark closet.

Let's put it this way, my daughter never owned a porcelain doll.

Thanks for the opportunity! Indigo

There's a lot of things I'm scared of but the main ones are:

Public speaking - Doesn't matter if it's a large group or small. Doesn't have to involve speaking either - just being the center of attention with everyone's eyes on me will do it.

Scorpions - I seem to attract them. They've fallen on me in bed. I've found them in my shirt while I'm wearing it. They freak me out! Now I feel buggy....

Falling - I'm not scared of heights, just falling. Also applies to riding roller coasters or motorcycles (can't handle the lean).

Thanks!

Squirrels. Sounds dumb, right? I work in a bookstore in a 150 year old barn. The attic is home to many things that we can't get rid of, squirrels being among the most evil of them all. I like the bats that live up there (they eat the bugs, after all) and I don't mind the birds, but the squirrels! I'm convinced that one of these times, they're going to attack me for taking away the boxes they use as nests.
Oh, and being buried alive. A little too much Poe in my formative years, perhaps.

Of all things to be scared of, I am scared to death of clowns. I know, I know, it sounds crazy but the way they paint their faces just scares me. They can have a great big smile painted on but watch their mouths and they are not always smiling. And while they are acting goofy, they may be plotting your demise. Come closer little girl, I want to place this pretty scarf around your neck and pull it tight until you can't breathe anymore-ACKKKK!!!!!!! The eyes too are so disturbing. They paint them cheerfully but the eyes are always on you to see your reaction to their antics. They want to invade your personal space and maybe touch you-yech! Anyway-clowns scare me-a lot-drunk old men who creep around and yell BOO at you when you aren't looking. I think I was exposed to the wrong kind of clown when I was a child. But then again-John Wayne Gacy was a clown-wasn't he??? Bwahhaaaaahhahahahahaha!!!

Scary? Big hairy spiders. Not the little ones that hang out around the houseplants, not daddy longlegs, not the one under my desk that I read bits of my manuscript to. I mean the ones big enough to see without my glasses on, with enough hair/fur that they look like they could use a comb and some styling product. The ones that look big enough to growl.

Gack.

Scary, huh? There is not a lot that scares me, I have dreams of the undead all the time and they are mostly just interesting. Vampires, werewolves, zombies and they used to disturb me, but now they are just intrigueing. I guess the only thing that scares me is real life stuff (although I do believe in the darker side of this world and like I said, it is only a curiosity to me), Losing my home, and everything I own is frightful as things are very bad financially for me and my family right now, no job, no money to pay bills and foreclosure sneaking up on us. That is what is scary to me! Anyway, I would love to win these books as I am an avid and voracious reader and I love to read any scary, horror, terror filled books as that lets me escape the real, scary world that I do live in! By the way love your site! I check it every day 5, 6, 7 times or more. Lve the comments section as it leads me away from real life and the true horrors of this world!

Frogs scare me. I used to live in an apartment that had a courtyard I had to cross to get to my front door and there was always like a plaque of tiny frogs jumping around that I had to get through. It traumatized me.

I suppose this may be a stereotypical response, but off the top of my head I would have to say spiders are a big thing that freak me out. Not necessarily small ones, but the big ones... yikes!

Crash-test dummies? That was a new one for me. Michael, you better not watch the "Doctor Who" episode where all the mannequins come alive and start killing people who are out shopping on Christmas Eve.

Recently I was terrified when the judge asked me if there was anything he could do to reconcile my marriage. This was said before he signed the final papers. I told him that I had waited 5 years for this divorce to be final and there wasn't anything he could do to talk me out of it. He stared at me for a moment and then signed the papers.
I was also scared, not too long ago, when someone very close to me suffered a heart attack and had to have open heart surgery. Thank goodness he's o.k. now. :)

I'm sort of embrassed to admit what I am afraid of, but its worth it, ecspecailly if all this books are for grabs. I really like Ted Dekker.
Ok so I am afraid of (1). the dark. I hate going outside alone in the dark in fear of something getting me, human or some monster. I still have to sleep with a night light and I'll be 21 in Jan! (2). I can't sleep in a room that has a mirror. And if I do have a mirror in my room it has to either be put way, turned around or covered. Adn yes I have covered hotel mirrors. I'm afraid of Bloody Mary. (childhood trauma) (3). My bed can not, at any cost, be off the ground where someone can slide under it. And if it is, under my bed has to have boxes so no one can get under there and get me.
I know this is all werid but it's my major fears in life, actually phobias. But what can you do, we all have or werid things about us.

Something that scares me...I'm afraid of being attacked by a shark while swimming in the ocean. Hence I have not swam in the ocean since seeing the movie "Jaws" as a little kid, even though I've lived my entire life about 10 minutes from the beach.

Demons scare me. Alot!!! Vampires, ghosts, and even bugs don't bother me at all but demons are just freaky. Reading about them is fine but movies no way. I will be up for days and won't even be able to go to the bathroom alone. Its all just too much.

steenface! said...

Pitch black darkness scares me. It gets my imagination going and, of course, I start replaying all the scary movies and books I've come across...

And spiders. Especially grass spiders. My husband insists they're harmless but, at our last house, those guys followed me everywhere in the house! Every time I turned around, there was a spider, just hanging out.

Nobody believed me until we were sitting on the couch one night and I got up to grab the remote; when I went to sit back down, a spider was sitting on the couch EXACTLY where I'd been not but a second before!

Anonymous said...

Spiders scare me to death!!!! I become terrified every time I see one in the house.

But the thing that scares me the most is the thought of losing someone I love. A family member, close friend...we live in such an evil and unpredictable world that I know this could happen at any time...and that scares me the most.

Rosie said...

Well, first and foremost, I'm terrified of spiders. They are just gross!! I've also been afraid of fire since I was a little girl. There are times that I think that I had something bad happen in a past life that had to do with fire.

What scares me is the idea of Extra Terrestrials. Whenever I see the commercial for the movie "The Fourth Kind" I have to either change the channel or leave the room. It just freaks me out! Ghosts and other super-natural things don't scare me much cause they would be on Earth.

Wow - it's amazing how many of us share similar fears lol, although I think reading the comments may have added a few NEW ones to my list of 'things to worry about'.

Well, I am scared of:
rats
being buried alive
plane & car crashes
needles & surgery

dentists (basically anything that hurts lol)

The dark, ghosts, bugs, etc don't bother me (yet) but sometimes I'm more jittery after watching a really creepy/plausible horror movie (Like the Shining)

God, these books look great and thanks for the chance to win :)

What scares me? The clown from Stephen King's IT. Anything with razor-sharp teeth, really, but this one especially. If that damnable creature doesn't solidify King's placement among the horror genre's great writers, I don't know what will.
