Nowadays it's easy to find hundreds of blogs about paranormal and urban fantasy fiction, but one of the first -- and still one of the best -- is Patricia Altner's Patricia's Vampire Notes (PVN). Patricia was a librarian and she's also reviewer for professional literary publications, so she brings high standards to her sites. She also brings enthusiasm and her thoughtful in-depth reviews make her a bloggers' blogger: someone we respect and admire.
Patricia is the author of Vampire Readings: an Annotated Bibliography, a book that internationally renowned vampire scholar Dr. Derek Tatum calls "one of my key reference texts when researching vampire books." Her publisher describes her book as: "an annotated bibliography of 779 entries divided into five sections: Novels; Anthologies and Novellas; Young Adult; Additional Readings; Unread Undead. The largest section is Novels and here, besides a summary of the plot (without spoilers), the author indicates where each novel may fit into other genres... Works by such writers as Anne Rice, Tanya Huff, Christopher Pike, Tanith Lee, Barbara Hambly, Kim Newman, and, of course, Bram Stoker are discussed ..."True to her librarian training, Patricia also maintains the Vampire Readings website, a comprehensive bibliography of both fiction and nonfiction books about vampires and a great place to go hunting for new authors and novels. And I've always recommended that fans of the genre subscribe to her excellent PVN email newsletter (info on her blog).
I'm so happy to have Patricia here because I really wanted to know how she keeps her love of the undead alive and where she thinks paranormal romance and urban fantasy are headed. Take notes because she mentions a lot of interesting writers and books!

MARTA: Hi, Patricia, and welcome to Vampire Wire! Would you please tell us the book that first sparked your passion for vampire and paranormal fiction?
PATRICIA: Hi Marta, thanks so much for inviting me here.
Actually my passion for paranormal fiction came first when I read a collection of stories by H. P. Lovecraft. I think I was about 10 years old at the time. His stories terrified me and kept me from sleeping at night and yet I found them so fascinating. I was hooked!
As for vampires, I first became enamored with them when watching "Dark Shadows" (guess I'm showing my age). Around the same time a friend loaned me a copy of Bram Stoker's Dracula. I could not put it down. That was one scary book! Still, I found the connection between Mina and the Count very intriguing, even romantic. It wasn't until much later I discovered I was not the only one who felt that way.MARTA: Your book, Vampire Readings: An Annotated Bibliography, was published in 1998, a full 12 years ago. Did you have any trouble then convincing a publisher that there was and would be an audience for these stories? If you published a revised edition today, what changes, if any, would you make?
PATRICIA: I was very lucky. I sent a proposal to a small publisher, Scarecrow Press, which publishes mostly academic books including many bibliographies. The editor liked the idea of focusing on vampires and told me to give her the full manuscript within a year. I was surprised and elated and then wondered what I had gotten myself into.
For a revised edition I would first need a collaborator! Really! I have been compiling titles since turning in the manuscript for Vampire Readings. There is no end to the number of publications in this genre coming out virtually every day - including ebooks.
In fact an ebook would probably be the best format for a revised Vampire Readings. Then additions could be made more easily. Another possibility is a database with lots of search functions so that people could put together there own mini bibliography or reading list and print it out or send it to their mobile.
Sorry, I'm starting to fantasize here :)
MARTA: Now there are a zillion paranormal and urban fantasy blogs, but you were one of the first to use the internet to share your interest in these genres. Did you ever expect it to become so popular? What do you think drives the trend?
PATRICIA: I have to thank my husband who is a computer wizard and helped me get started with using the internet. At first I put together an irregular ezine called Undead Updates and after several iterations I ended up on Blogger with Patricia's Vampire Notes.
Thank you for calling it popular! I do have many faithful readers and I truly appreciate their support.
Most urban fantasy has a splendid blend of the paranormal and romance which deftly combines two popular genres. With the internet and platforms like Blogger and Wordpress it is very easy to start up a blog and these services are free. Now readers can easily express their opinions and spread the word about all the excellent reading material.
MARTA: You were a librarian, so you bring a lot of historical knowledge about the genre. How have you seen paranormal/UF change over the years and do you have any predictions about the future of these genres?
PATRICIA: Most of my professional library experience has been as a reference librarian in technical libraries. A big part of my job included research and compiling subject bibliographies. So my take on the genre comes from being a reader with a librarian's eye - Publisher's Weekly, Library Journal, and Locus are favorite reading materials. In 1995 when I began compiling notes for Vampire Readings there were several series and stand alone books that were clearly just about vampires. Many fell into the horror category but there was also a definite growth within the romance genre. Often the vampire was a brooding hero who loathed his undead status and more than anything wanted to be human.
There was the sense that by becoming a vampire he had been touched by evil and probably damned for eternity, even if he really was a good guy. That attitude is not so prevalent anymore.I first became aware of what is now termed urban fantasy with first Tanya Huff's Blood Books series and then Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake Vampire Hunter books. Here vampires share the stage with other paranormals- werewolves and other were animals, fairies, ghosts, ogres, zombies, succubi and incubi, witches, angels- fallen or otherwise. I'll stop here but you get the idea. Writers have a huge menu to choose from, and I like the idea of worlds where so many varieties of the paranormal mix it up.
Now it seems zombies as heroes or heroines have arrived. I admit I have not read any of these books. First I have to get over my instant image of a zombie as an animated rotting corpse. When zombies need to be slain, I can deal with that although it's usually rather messy.
B
iblical references to creation, the apocalypse, angels and demons are also showing up more and more. And well known personages literary and historical are entering the paranormal universe - Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter, Queen Victoria, Demon Hunter, Mr. Darcy, Vampyre by Amanda Grange, etc.As for the future. I think I'll take a pass. I admit to being a really bad prognosticator.
MARTA: Can you share any favorite new discoveries?
PATRICIA: Here are four recent entries that come to mind.
-The Reformed Vampire Support Group by Catherine Jinks This is a classified as a YA book but I didn't realize it until I had finished, having thoroughly enjoyed it.
Here's the premise: Being a vampire definitely has it's drawback. A small group of them meet weekly at a Catholic Church mostly to whine about aches, and pains, and boredom. Of course all of that is about to change when the newbie detectives have to solve a murder.
-Love Fang by Susan Blexrud (April 2009)
The first is a series of short stories about this sweet young couple - he's a vampire and she's a dentist - who find true, extremely passionate love.
-Casting Spells and Laced with Magic by Barbara Bretton (Berkley Trade, August 4, 2009)
Heroine Chloe Hobbs is a sorceress and owner of a popular knit shop. The setting is the charming town of Sugar Maple, Vermont where all the inhabitants appear human, but of course they're not.
-
Succubus series by Richelle MeadNot new to many, but new to me. So far I've read Succubus Blues, and Succubus on Top. I love the world and the characters that Mead has created.
MARTA: Can you tell me a few undiscovered gems that you wish more people would read?
PATRICIA: Sure! There's a Casa Dracula series I would like to see on the NYT bestseller list!
These are gems and I would definitely like to bring to readers' attention.
- Fear Me by Stephen Laws
- Fevre Dream by George R. R. Martin
- Sunshine by Robin McKinley
- Gideon Redoak by Anne Fraser
- The Society of S by Susan Hubbard
- Season of the Witch by Natasha Mostert
- The Vampire Tapestry by Suzy McKee Charnas
- Vamped: A Novel by David Sosnowski
- Those of My Blood by Jacqueline Lichtenberg
MARTA: What’s your guilty pleasure – a book that you constantly go back to?
PATRICIA: Here Be Dragons by Sharon Kay Penman. It's a historical novel set in the time of the infamous King John. But the binding thread throughout is the love story of Joanna (John's illegitimate daughter) and Prince Llewelyn of Wales.I'll mention one more. The Lions of al Rasson by Guy Gavriel Kay. This is an alternate history/fantasy set during the time of the reconquista of Spain.
MARTA: I love your book reviews because you take them seriously, aware of the author’s effort and intentions. What advice would you give a new reviewer?
PATRICIA: Thanks, Marta. When I review a book I put a lot of work into it even if that doesn't show in the final product :) I want readers to know not only the plot but also about the characters and how they interact. I truly admire authors and want to show readers what these wordsmiths have accomplished. If I get that across I'm happy.
I would advise new reviewers that while reading a book think about what the author is trying to accomplish, and how is s/he doing it. Ask yourself how this book fits with other books by the author and with other book in the same genre. Take notes even if it only means writing down a few words about an important event or your own reaction to something in particular. Read the type of books you enjoy.
Eventually everyone comes up with their own way of doing things.
MARTA: What’s the most rewarding part about being a reviewer, author, and blogger?
PATRICIA: I started blogging as a way to let readers know about what was being published in the vampire/paranormal fiction world. I think it was my librarian soul wanting to get out the word about all the neat books to choose from.
Over the years I've reviewed for Library Journal, Fantasy Review, some smaller publications (no payment involved). By writing for my own blog I felt free to make up my own editorial rules, which may not always be for the best, but I was more comfortable.
As a blogger/reviewer I get to introduce readers to books and writers I believe they will enjoy - that's the reason for PVN. Having an author do a guest blog or an interview is another way to get the word out. All of this brings me a lot of satisfaction!
For now my life as an author is writing about the paranormal fiction world and that's fine with me.
MARTA: Where can readers find out more about you and your sites?
PATRICIA:
- My blog site: Patricia's Vampire Notes
- Vampire Readings: The Online Bibliography ( a bit out of date, but still with useful information)
- email: patriciaaltner@gmail.com
MARTA: Okay, tell us, what’s your idea of reading heaven? Where do you best like to read, what do you want to be reading, what’s the setting, and do you have a cup of tea, coffee, or a frozen daiquiri in hand?
PATRICIA: Reading Heaven: A comfy chaise lounge and umbrella on a white sandy beach that stretches for miles in each direction. Blue ocean with soft waves. A steady supply of pina coladas (with extra maraschino cherries). I would be reading Succubus on Top by Richelle Mead.
Reading Reality: Sitting in an armchair in my office. On a side table - coffee, a notebook, post-it flags, maybe a cookie. I would be reading whatever is next in my to be reviewed pile.
MARTA: Thanks, Patricia!
Patricia: Marta, it has been a pleasure!

It's storming here, so I thought you needed videos for a rainy day.

Please count me in. I sometimes get my reviews from B&N or Goodreads.

Patricia,
It's nice to know I'm not the only person who's read Those of My Blood.
As far as reviews i subscribe to several blogs, use Amazon and also just like to go and wander around a bookstore and see what catches my eye.
Hi Bethie
Thanks for joining in! I am also a member of Goodreads. It's a great source of book info.
SandyG265
Jacqueline Lichtenberg created a terrific novel in Those of My Blood. It's the first SF/vampire story I remember readeing. Great to know that you appreciate as well!!
Hi, everyone! I do learn a lot about books online, too, and now I really want to read Richelle's Succubus books. (I do like the UK covers of this series better, but the cover is just the eye candy.)
As a reader, I'm cautious about Amazon & Barnes & Noble reviews because some give away all the plot points -- and I don't want to read spoilers before I read a book. I want to be surprised. I often read customers' reviews when I've finished a book.
Great interview - there are a lot of new books there for me to look into & I'm sure I'll be adding quite a few to my wish list :o) I read the first 2 succubus books by Richelle Mead last week & really enjoyed them - I've got the next 2 books from the library alreday & can't wait to get stuck into them!
I love to browse in bookshops just looking for new books that catch my eye but I have to limit myself or I can end up spending far too much money LOL. I also quite often end up finding new books from Amazon recommendations based on other books I've brought. I only recently started looking at review blogs but I've got quite a few that I now visit reguarly that give great recommendations.

Great interview!
I go to Goodreads, Bitten by Books, or just people's blogs if I want a review. But honestly, I'm usually happier just browsing around a bookstore for an hour or so.
notreallysouthernvampchick(at)gmail(dot)com
It was great to read this interview! I am a faithful follower of Patricia's Blog and get my reviews from there, also Dirty Sexy Books.com because I'm often on the same wave length as Rebecca, and on Paranormal Romance.wordpress because Diana has some good reviews and I write a review on there once in awhile. When I'm thinking of buying I do check out the Amazon reviews but don't rely totally. I come to Marta for recommendations and GVDs.
I usually browse around amazon to get a closer look at a book I'm interested in. Though I don't take other people's reviews to seriously. After all, a book one person hates another may love. Great interview.
Hi, all! Sarah, I know what you mean about spending too much. I bought a stack of books for myself, which I can sort of justify, and was stunned when I saw the total at the counter. Still, it's hard to feel bad about loving to read.
Chelsea, I always think the trick is to find someone whose taste is similar to yours. Once you do that, you can always go to them for suggestions.
Dot S., I mention a lot of the usual paranormal blogs a lot, but I think Rebecca of Dirty Sexy Books is terrific and she covers a lot of paranormal/urban fantasy.
Great interview! I've read and loved most of Patricia's favorite books, so I'm looking forward to checking out the rest, as well as her blog!
I go everywhere for reviews. I read tons of book web sites and blogs, and I buy "Booknotes" and subscribe to "RT Book Reviews" magazine. I love reading about books (and talking about them!) almost as much as reading them. :)
Hello Ladies, I love reading your comments!
Karen, There is nothing more stimulating than talking or writing about a book you've read. Hope you have a chance to stop by PVN.
Chelsea, I agree with Marta. Try to find someone with similar tastes. Of course, there are no guarantees. You might still hate it. :)
Hi Dot, How are ya? Dirty Sexy Books and Paranormal romance are 2 of my favs as well.
Amanda, I heart bookstores too. A "date night" for hubby and me is dinner and a bookstore.
Sarah, I am a book-buyer-aholic. Many times I have pledged to cut down on B&N trips or Amazon browsing. It has never worked, but I'm not sorry. :)
Patricia, good to know we're in your company!
Karen, RT is also a great place to learn about soon-to-be-published books. I always check it out when I'm doing lists of upcoming releases.
Marta and Patricia - what a fabulous interview. Patricia I liked your list of gems and I found several unfamiliar to me which is great news.
I just shared this fabulous interview on my Facebook page. Whoa, you made my day, Patricia. Listing my little book, Love Fang, as one of your "new favorite discoveries" was such an honor pour moi. Many, many, thanks, and keep doing what you do for readers and writers. And Marta, thanks for the insightful interview with Patricia. I'm a devotee of Vampire Wire.
As for where I go for reviews (aside from PVN and Vampire Wire, of course), I like SMTB and Dear Author.
Hi Doug
Hope you get a chance to read some of the gems you didn't know about. Thanks so much for your comment!
Hello Susan
Glad you liked the interview, and you know I love your book!
I'd love to read Vampire Readings!
The Book Smugglers is a great place for book reviews. The ladies there are thorough and honest.
I get reviews from many places, blogs, Amazon, and reader recommendations on the Yahoo groups.
Angel
Glad you mentioned Book Smugglers. Excellent review site.
Andrea
Yes, there are many good places for recommendations. Thanks for commenting.
This is completely random, but where did you find that cover for Christopher Pike's Remember Me?? I've had the original since elementary school (almost 20 years, lol. probably closer to 15) and the cover is now secured with a rubber band. I haven't seen the new cover!!!!
As for reviews (delayed responses...they're my thing! lol), Bitten by Books is my go-to place. They are amazing, AND they let me review there, LOL.
I am a huge fan of Goodreads, so I scope out all my reviews there. And my other resort are blogs and Amazon. I really don't read reviews all the way through, just enough to know if I'll like something or not.
The blog I frequent most for reviews and Bitten By Books. I do like to cruise around VW, Wicked 'Lil Pixie, and All things Urban Fantasy. And now, PVN! Thanks for sharing!
I do like to just look around in the bookstores and pick books myself that sound interesting. I do read reviews and comments from different blogs I follow, groups I belong to, and the online booksellers.
(I'm the "wander around a bookstore for an hour" type.
For now, I happen to have some newsletter from several Authors, Sometimes i check out Amazon, some reviews blog, PVN, Bitten by Books, Yankee romance reviewers, and another more than 100 blogs that i visit everyday :)
go to our local bookstore is my number one favorite, coz yeap, i love to wander more than 2 hours in book store. love it !
Jackie
I am in awe of all the things Rachel has done with BBB. It is definitely one of the places to visit.
Marianna
I only recently joined Goodreads and find it so helpful for getting a feel for what others are reading and what new material I might be missing.
mieger0546
BBB has maybe 70 reviewers and covers the paranormal genre like no other.
Having said that I hope you do get a chance to stop by PVN :)
Linda and Mariska
Two more fellow bookstore wanderers. We should start a club altho proximity might be a problem :) In my youth I wanted to own a bookstore, now I think I'm better off being a browser and buyer.
Mariska, Glad you enjoy PVN!
I usually wander a little through my bookstore, but lately I have started to research a bit about them before buying books, usually in Books Blogs or online newsletters.
Sheere
Often I will have a list of new books I'm interested in. Most of these came from reviews I've read. Still I spend a LOT of time browsing which means I end up with many impulse buys. Just can't help myself.
I check out several blogs to read reviews. I love Bitten By Books, and All Things URban Fantasy. Plus, recommendations by friends are always useful too.
heatwave96(at)hotmail.com

BBB and All Things Urban Fantasy - 2 fav sites.
Sadly none of my friends like fantasy. Go figure.
I'm a little bit late to the party, but thanks for the great interview, Marta and Patricia! I lurk around at Patricia's site and really enjoy her reviews. I also really like the Book Smugglers, because their tastes are eclectic yet correspond pretty well with mine, the Sci Fi Guy, and the Discriminating Fan Girl. Plus I'm pretty active on Goodreads.com; I love to read and post reviews!
Thanks for the awesome giveaway
Hi Kimberly
Happy you didn't miss the party :)
Thanks for including PVN in the you list of sites you visit!
I will look for you on Goodreads.
I loved this Q&A I learned so much about Patricia :)
My top Favorite sites for reviews or updates on books, just to keep in know.
patricia's Vampire Notes "of course"
Vampire Wire
Sci Fi Guy
Amberkatze
Hello Tanya
Thank you for the lovely remarks and including PVN on your list!
We seem to think alike in that Vampire Wire, ScFiGuy and Amberkatze have also been loooong time favorites of mine.
Hi, Patricia and everyone! There are so many great blogs. I try to list as many as I can on my sidebar blogroll, but I limit it to blogs that are regularly updated. Sometimes people can't keep up with the burden of blogging, but I'm amazed at those that keep going forward through the years.
Patricia was one of the originals, and I'm glad that she's still writing away about vampy books!
I've not come across Patricia's site before but I will definitely go and have a look now. It sounds great!
I normally get my reviews from blogs or Amazon. I love browsing round book shops but I never buy anything as I would never stop and would end up spending huge amounts of money. The good thing about working in a library is that I get first pick of all the new books when they arrive!!! That is usually my way of reading new books.
Chrissie, lucky you, working in a library! I love libraries, and they're a great place to discover books, especially on a budget.
Some of Patricia's reviews are published in Library Journal.
I'm so grateful for libraries--without them I wouldn't be able to read so much! I get a lot of my book reviews from Book Page and online from booksellers and bloggers.
Hi Chrissie
I hope you do have a chance to drop by PVN!
For anyone who lives near a public library I encourage you to look for your reading material in this fine institution. So I'm really glad you brought up this point Chrissie!
Is my librarian soul showing :-)
Marta
Thanks for mentioning Library Journal! Yes, I do review for LJ. Often when a vampire book arrives the editor forwards it to me.
Which brings me to the point that LJ is an excellent source for reviews. So is Publisher's Weekly. Most libraries carry both periodicals.
And once more, Marta, thank you so much for inviting me to Vampire Wire. You are a generous hostess, and I love your readers!
lit806
Thank you fellow library lover! We are so lucky to live in a country that has such an excellent library system.
I get a good bit of my reviews from the internet. I've compiled a list of sites that I enjoy reading and usually can trust their reviews. I also like seeing what everyone is reading on Twitter.
Thank you!
Hi, Rachel, you're the first person to mention Twitter, but I know some readers like to read their Twitters while visiting the bookstore. You've got a great site! I'll link to it tomorrow.
Hi Rachel
Hadn't thought about it but Twitter can be a good site for finding what books are available now or those coming soon. Authors often announce their latest on Twitter.
Marta,
Maybe when (if) I get an iPhone I'll read Tweets while in a bookstore, but since I'm not that good at multitasking it might not be a good idea. I would probably walk into some monster display and knock it over.
Ditto on Rachel's site!
Hi, I love Sharon Kay Penman also. Great book!
Please count me in for the giveaway. I have a great number of blogs such as this one on my google reader so that I can keep up with whats new. I also have a goodreads account and follow friend reviews.
Thank you!
Jason
vslavetopassionv@aol.com
Hi Jason
At last a fellow Penman fan! I love all of her books but Here Be Dragons is my favorite.
Patricia:
Thank you for listing my novel THOSE OF MY BLOOD in such illustrious company.
It and the companion novel DREAMSPY are still available on amazon, and I hope on Kindle soon. There is a link to free chapters on http://jacquelinelichtenberg.com
Jacqueline Lichtenberg
Hi, Jacqueline,
Patricia may not see this since this interview happened some months ago, but I just sent a Twitter with a link to your free chapters. Thanks for dropping by Vampire Wire!
