Contest Mania! More Contests Than You Can Shake a Stick At!

Today's theme is Contest Mania!

Jessica at The Spinecracker has a trailer and contest for Retribution, Sherilynn Kenyon's new Dark Hunter book.

A shout out of congratulations to Suzanne Johnson at Preternatura! She's sold her third Royal Street book to Tor. I read an ARC of the first book and loved the New Orleans setting, magical worldbuilding, and the mysteries. The hawt pirate didn't hurt either.

Suzanne's got a review of and contest for Night Walker by Lisa Kessler. Suzanne says:
Crazed, secretive monks, vampires, Native American lore, 18th-cenury San Diego, vampires. Sheesh. Can you really ask any more of a book? Oh yeah, well. Sinister conspiracies and a hot Spanish immortal. You can add those.

I've got a contest for Jennifer Estep's Touch of Frost, book one in her new Mythos Academy series. You can read Jennifer's guest blog at Moonlight Book Reviews:
The books focus on Gwen Frost, a 17-year-old Gypsy girl who has the gift of psychometry, or the ability to know an object’s history just by touching it. After a serious freak-out with her magic, Gwen is shipped off to Mythos Academy, a school for the descendants of ancient warriors like Spartans, Valkyries, Amazons, and more.
Jennifer is also visiting my Canadian archnemesis Doug Knipe at SciFi Guy today and having a contest for Touch of Frost. Clearly, he lured her there with promises of frosty lager and maple sugar candy. Bitter bitter is my heart!

Amanda at LoveVampires has an international contest for Justin Gustainis's Sympathy for the Devil, the third book in his Morris and Chastain Investigations series.

Jackie at Literary Escapism is having a fab contest where the winner can pick one of several books with a black and white themed cover, including Forgotten by Cat Patrick.
SUMMARY: Each night when 16 year-old London Lane goes to sleep, her whole world disappears. In the morning, all that’s left is a note telling her about a day she can’t remember. The whole scenario doesn’t exactly make high school or dating that hot guy whose name she can’t seem to recall any easier. But when London starts experiencing disturbing visions she can’t make sense of, she realizes it’s time to learn a little more about the past she keeps forgetting-before it destroys her future.

Abigail at All Things Urban Fantasy has a contest for Gerry Bartlett's Real Vampires Don't Wear Size Six, the latest in the comic Glory St. Clair series. Abigail also has a summary and a link to an excerpt.
After Glory St. Clair kicked out the demon that had set up shop in her body, she had a serious fallout with longtime lover Jeremy Blade. But before Glory can win him back, she has some issues of the hellish variety to deal with.

Anna Vivian at Anna's Book Blog has a contest for Anne Bishop's Twilight's Dawn, which is fantasy, not paranormal, but in the magnanimous spirit of Contest Mania! I'm including it.
Daemon, the Black Jeweled Warlord Prince of Dhemlan, is settling into his first year of married life with his Witch Queen Jaenelle. But as the thirteen-day celebration of Winsol draws near, Daemon finds himself being pulled in too many directions as he plays host to his formidable family…

Jennifer Estep Interview & Contest for TOUCH OF FROST

"I found myself flying through the pages...Amazingly fresh and engaging urban fantasy with a plucky and clever heroine."
Stephanie, Bookaholics

"Fantastic world building draws you in in from the first page and holds you captive till till the last. I love the idea of a school where snooty stronger then life mythological kids go yet they have deal with regular everyday problems."
Tori, Smexy Books

"I give A Touch of Frost 5 chocolate dipped strawberries and a slice of grandma's pumpkin roll!"
Tyra, Guilty Indulgence Book Club

I'm very happy to have Jennifer Estep visit again, now to talk about her new young adult book, Touch of Frost. Jennifer, who has explored different subgenres of urban fantasy, is entering the Young Adult book market with her Mythos Academy series.

I'm utterly impressed with Jennifer's creativity, and it was only a year ago when she guest-blogged at Vampire Wire about her dark and gritty Elemental Assassin series. And if she's not busy enough, her first series, the Bigtime superhero books, have just been released as e-books for the terrific price of $2.99.

Jennifer is very kindly offering a copy of Touch of Frost for a contest. Please read to the end of the post for entry details.

SUMMARY: My name is Gwen Frost, and I go to Mythos Academy — a school of myths, magic and warrior whiz kids, where even the lowliest geek knows how to chop off somebody's head with a sword and Logan Quinn, the hottest Spartan guy in school, also happens to be the deadliest.

But lately, things have been weird, even for Mythos. First, mean girl Jasmine Ashton was murdered in the Library of Antiquities. Then, someone stole the Bowl of Tears, a magical artifact that can be used to bring about the second Chaos War. You know, death, destruction and lots of other bad, bad things. Freaky stuff like this goes on all the time at Mythos, but I'm determined to find out who killed Jasmine and why—especially since I should have been the one who died. . .
So let's welcome Jennifer and find out more about her new book and her Mythos Academy series!

MARTA: Congratulations on the release of Touch of Frost, Jennifer! You’ve written about superheroes and mythical characters in your adult fiction. How was writing a YA different?

JENNIFER: Thanks, Marta! Writing a YA has definitely been a fun challenge. My Elemental Assassin adult urban fantasy series is very dark and gritty, so it was nice to write something a little lighter with Touch of Frost and the rest of the books in my Mythos Academy young adult urban fantasy series.

It’s also been a challenge to incorporate all the things that I like to include in my books – action, adventure, magic, danger, fight scenes, and even a little romance – and still capture that YA voice. It’s a tough balancing act juggling all those elements and at the same time still showing my YA heroine figuring out who she is and how she becomes her own person – watching her grow up and come into her own.

So far, I’m having a blast writing the Mythos Academy series, and I hope folks have as much fun reading the books as I do writing about them.

MARTA: What’s your favorite thing about Gwen Frost?

JENNIFER: I like the fact that Gwen isn’t perfect. She’s snarky and sarcastic, and she’s way too nosy for her own good, thanks to her psychometry magic. But Gwen always tries to do the right thing and fight the good fight. She’s really determined, and she always keeps fighting no matter how bad the odds are against her.

MARTA: Writing generally means rewriting and often cutting interesting details and scenes in order to improve the final manuscript. Can you share anything about Gwen and Mythos that didn’t make the final edit?

JENNIFER: The cool thing about writing a mythology-based series is that there are so many myths out there, along with legends, folklore, and fairy tales. It was cool to sort of pick and choose the myths that I thought would fit into my story well and then let my imagination run wild and put my own spin on them.

As far as scenes go, I’ll give you a teaser and say that there is a lot more to come with Gwen and Logan in Kiss of Frost. ;-)

MARTA: Where you having flashbacks to your teenage years?

JENNIFER: A few. LOL. But I think Gwen is a lot cooler than I ever was back then.

MARTA: In your vast scholarship on supergods wielding swords and dressing in cool costumes, who is the most unappreciated of these characters?

JENNIFER: I think Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, is really interesting. It seems like most of the Greek myths focus on well-known gods like Zeus, Ares, or Athena and not so much on gods like Nike. That’s why I thought it would cool to take Nike and come up with my own sort of character and backstory for her in my books.

MARTA: What’s next in this series?

JENNIFER: Kiss of Frost, the second book, will be out on Nov. 29. Dark Frost, the third book, will be out in June 2012. Also, First Frost, a prequel e-story to the series, is available now as a 99-cent download on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other online booksellers.

MARTA: Where can readers find out more about Touch of Frost and your books?

JENNIFER: Folks can find out more about me at:

MARTA: Thanks for visiting Vampire Wire!

JENNIFER: Thanks for having me on the blog again. I appreciate it. Happy reading, everyone! ;-)

***********************Be sure to visit Jennifer's website to find out about her books and how you can get very fab free bookmarks.

CONTEST: To enter the contest for a copy of Touch of Frost, just leave a comment for Jennifer or a comment about something mythological that you like. Maybe you always wanted to wield Thor's mighty hammer (no, that's not dirty-- you just have a dirty mind), or you fancied yourself battling alongside Greek and Roman gods and demi-gods a la Xena, Warrior Princess.

The contest runs through August 14 and is restricted to US and Canada residents. You must leave an email address or have an email address linked on your profile. A winner will be selected by random draw.

A Very Special SPEAKING OF Edition and Contest Winner

Tomorrow I'll have Jennifer Estep, author of the exciting Elemental Assassin series, here to talk about her new young adult urban adventure, Touch of Frost, book one in the Mythos Academy books. Jennifer will also give away a book in a contest!

SPEAKING OF contests, the winner of the contest for Jenn Bennett's Kindling the Moon is

SANDYG

Congratulations, Sandy! I hope you enjoy your prize. (I really want to read this book -- magic, a tiki bar, urban fantasy shenanigans!) Sandy follows a hundred blogs, but I'm pretty sure that Vampire Wire is her favorite.

SPEAKING OF books I really want to read, Kelsey at The Book Scout has an interview with Victoria Schwab, author of The Near Witch.
I grew up with a distinct lack of urban legends, of stories to twist my towns into places darker, more fanciful. So I dreamt them up. I concocted tales about the dead singing, and people made of shadow who lurked in spaces between, etc. I grew up looking for ways to make my world more magical. I'm still doing that.

SPEAKING OF Victoria Schwab, I really wanted to find more information on her website about her book which sounds deliciously creepy and what's next. And her website is kewl and yet...I couldn't easily find cover art, summaries, etc. because the design supersedes the functionality. I don't want to have to click around and hope I can find this info. I'm not interested in the designer's work: I'm interested in the author's work. I see this sort of website most often with YA authors. Please, please, don't let the designers lure you into the rocks with their siren song of "You know what would be really cool?" At that point, just put your hands over your ears and go "la la la la la."

SPEAKING OF The Near Witch, Bewitched Bookworms posts a summary and a review:
In the town of Near, the old ways are being forgotten and old prejudices are embraced. When a mysterious stranger shows up, the very same night the children of Near start disappearing, fear runs rampant; young hunter Lexi must find the children before the boy she is in love with is destroyed...
The Near Witch is haunting and beautifully crafted. Ms. Schwab has a poetic way with words that pulls the reader in. Her cast of characters is rich, if not slightly one-dimensional.

SPEAKING OF Bewitched Bookworms, why haven't I found this blog before? It's the collaborative effort of five women and they review: Young Adult, Fantasy, Paranormal and Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance, and Mystery and Suspense. It's an attractive site with lots of content and the Bookworms also have interviews, contests, features, and gossip. The contests are all over, so be sure to spend some time snooping around the site!

SPEAKING OF websites that combine both function and form, check out author Sarah Porter's gorgeous website for her Lost Voices trilogy. I love this clever design and wonderful layout. As soon as I get my cover art for Dark Companion, I'm going to redo my own website and try to use all the lesson's (both good and bad) that I've learned from other authors' sites.

GRATUITOUS VIDEOS OF THE DAY

My theme is Speaking of, so I'm choosing videos with talk, words, speak, say, anything like that in the song titles.

The first four seconds of this The Vampire Diaries tribute are gory, so if you're squeamish like me, skip ahead.
