LOST GIRL Fey Series & Happy Birthday, Martin! GVDs

As a general rule, I'm disappointed with the SyFy Channel, and not only because I have to use the stooopid "syfy" spelling that their branding geniuses thunk up. I mean, these are the people who decided to remake a terrific paranormal series (Being Human) that was still running and already in English. Really? Really? (If you haven't watched the BBC's Being Human, go out and rent this awesome vampires-werewolf-ghost show.)

Okay, we all know I'm cranky, but I'm not so cranky that I'll completely write off SyFy, especially when it will be running Lost Girl, a series that's been running in Canada for two seasons already. The show premieres tonight. SyFy doesn't bother having an episode summary, or even a series summary, but I found a review at BlogCritics by Michelle Alexandria:
Anna Silk is Bo, a Succubus raised as a human. She has no idea where she comes from or what she is. The world doesn’t know her and she doesn’t know the world. That is until she makes the mistake of saving a human Kenzi (Ksenia Solo) from being date raped. This action has repercussions because you can’t just leave dead bodies around town without someone noticing. Turns out there’s a whole other world out there made of of Fae.

The Fae are a mixed group of “supernatural” species. In this world everyone has to take a side - you are either for the light or the dark, no independents allowed...
Most other reviews mention that Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans might enjoy this series and that it's got a little snarkiness and a little sexiness and a little kick-assness and a little fae/human political intrigue. So I'll watch it.

Here's the trailer.

GRATUITOUS VIDEOS OF THE DAY

To celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, here are videos of some of my favorite characters who make the paranormal/supernatural world more thrilling.

Gina Torres is always terrific, especially when she was sexy, kickass Zoe Washburne in Joss Whedon's Firefly and Serenity.

I'm crazy about Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman) of Doctor Who, who went from being a doctor to saving the world...a couple of times.

Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham) is the girl who discovers she's a witch on The Vampire Diaries. I'm still catching up on this series.

Annie (Lenora Critchlow) of Being Human is my favorite ghost ever. The clip at the beginning of this is from Misfits and there's a little cussing. Do I have to warn you guys about cussing? I have no idea.

Hey Marta,
living in Canada Lost Girl is on all the time so I've watched a few episodes. I like it while I'm watching it but I never feel compelled to watch every episode. If you can get past the "cheap" feeling of the show, the story is pretty good, as are the characters.

Hi, Lisa! Thanks for the info. I actually don't mind low production values that much if a story is good and the characters are interesting. I really hate the reverse -- expensive effects and no effort in the story.

As for the "hook" of the story, I'm feeling that way about The Vampire Diaries, but people I trust assure me I'll get hooked if I keep watching, so I'm going to keep watching.

Oh, i'm going to try watching it. Thanks for bringing it to my attention, Marta! Funny how the tv industry only now turns to fae. Should have done ages ago. I hope TV series on Karen Marie Moning Fever books will be made. That would have been absolutely fantastic!

Hi, Kara! I hadn't heard anything about it until today. I'm a little surprised that succubi as being classified as fae (and I do like Richelle Mead's series). I think the fae world was ignored because fairly recent trends for it were precious --- but bad fairies are much more interesting.

Just make sure and give it at least four episodes. It took them two or three to get into the swing of things.

Hey, Buzzard, are you talking about TVD or Lost Girl? I think I've watched three eps of TVDs.

Lost Girl. I had to give up on TVD after two episodes. I'm male, over 30, and not emo. I'm completely out of every demographic qualifier for that show except being human.

Watched both seasons of Lost Girl and while the production values may not be top tier the writing is fine, stories fun and all round kind of a guilty pleasure. It has some good series spanning story arcs and lots of unusual fae creatures outside the usual fair. Definitely a TV example of urban fantasy.

Buzzard, yeah, I don't qualify for a lot of shows' demographics, but I'll try.

Hi, Doug! Thanks for dropping by. I recorded the show last night. There are some shows with cheezy production values that really make up for it with stories, characters, and acting. A lot of shows out of Hollywood have huge special effects budgets, but there's nothing here. Which is why I won't bother seeing movies like Avatar.

Regarding TVD, you have to keep watching. The first half of the first season was less than "meh" but then it found it's grove and now that show is insane. I'm totally addicted to it. Re: Lost Girl. I'll take low production values and a good story first too (I never watched Avatar either.)
